Eight is a series that reflects an emotional journey through my college career and acts as a culmination of both previous work and the main themes explored. This series is composed of eight black-and-white screenprints of bird species acting as emotional metaphors. Birds as metaphors for common emotions allows a relatability that allows the audience to reflect on their own experiences and emotion.
Birds have also been an interest of mine for some time, a connection to my grandmother which I hold dear. My college career has been turbulent, especially through the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020. While I have not lost anyone to the disease, I have lost family members and a close friend during this time and had to work through loss and grief alongside many others. Exploring death and loss in screenprinting has allowed me to explore a new medium at a dire time. This practice will continue into this series, excluding color and focusing on the craft of line and reproducibility—aspects of screenprinting that I've come to enjoy, especially in a contemporary age of mass production. Each piece can stand alone but can also be combined to form a large-scale piece, connected through repeated elements and objects.
